Hammock Art - Family of Thai Tribes

Hammock Art - Familie der Thai Tribes

The story of Hammock Art

In 1996, Swiss textile engineer and dropout Peter Schmidt discovered the craftsmanship of the hill tribes and began weaving hammocks with them. His textile expertise and the traditional craftsmanship of the local people led to the creation of the first net hammocks in Thailand.

21 years later, Hammock Art has now created a hammock collection that is hard to beat in terms of design, comfort and quality.

The Hammock Art Family

We give the handmade luxury & designer hammocks from Thailand a face and tell who is behind the family business of Hammock Art.

Sawasdee dear Peter, dear Phrannee, Sybille & May.

Hammock Art has its home in Chiang Rai in northern Thailand – a place where you can still feel the happy hippie feeling.

The web artists

Hammock Art provides a steady income to 20 weavers from the Thai Hill Tribes.

The highest priority is placed on the quality of the training, as the weaving technique is very complex and requires a great deal of patience. After just under a year, the weavers are ready to weave their masterpieces independently.

Originally intended as an alternative source of income, the project is now a permanent employer for over 20 men and women from the Lanna, Lahu, Khmu and Hmong tribes.
